Pumped Storage Plant

Current Scenario

As per Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Target set by GoI to get 50% of installed capacity by 2030 from non-fossil fuel sources & achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070, nation is on a path towards energy transition.

Pumped Storage Project Requirement:

In energy mix, currently Solar and Wind energy constitute towards 25% of total energy capacity. Being Variable & intermittent renewable energy sources (VREs), some challenges for grid stability due to their dependencies on time, day, weather and other meteorological constraints arises. Thus, Pumped storages technology are capable of storing electrical energy on a large scale and in a cost effective and sustainable way. It provides flexible supply to grids and are generally used in conjunction with other VREs by taking advantage of existing transmission infrastructure and readily combining with storage capabilities to provide dispatchable, uninterruptable and flexible power generation. Thus, global pumped storage capacities are expected to grow substantially to about 200 GW in 2030, and about 300 GW in 2015. This will lead to significant increases in its share of national grids.

Principle of Pump Storage

Pumped storage schemes store electric energy by pumping water from a lower reservoir into an upper reservoir when there is a surplus of electrical energy in a power grid. During periods of high energy demand the water is released back through the turbines and electricity is generated and fed into the grid.
